EMFs and Ill-Health 
When Rachel Carson wrote Silent Spring in the early 60’s very few people had any idea about the mountain of evidence that would follow supporting her contention that the pesticides being used by everyone were killing us. In the new millennium authors like Levitt, Brodeur and Smith to name a few have given the wakeup call for people to become aware of a very present threat to our health and the health of our children. 

What are Electromagnetic Fields (EMFs)?
Sometimes referred to as Extremely Low Frequency (ELF), EMFs are magnetic fields created by voltage. These magnetic fields are odorless, tasteless, silent and impossible to feel but they are affecting our health in a very big and negative way. EMFs are created by electrical appliances, electrical wiring in your home or office, computers, electric blankets, and power lines. 

What do EMFs do to us?
EMF’s disrupt cell membranes thereby promoting ill health and disease. At present, scientific studies have shown a link between EMFs and: Brain tumors, altered brain function, depression, sleep disruption, leukemia, birth defects, miscarriages, chronic fatigue, headaches, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, immune system deficiencies, heart problems, forgetfulness, cancer as well as other health problems. 

Dr. David Carpenter, dean at the School of Public Health at the State University of New York, is convinced that up to 30% of all childhood cancers could be the result of EMFs. In 1990, the EPA recommended EMFs be given Class B carcinogenic status, "probable human carcinogen'" and joined the ranks of formaldehyde, DDT, dioxins and PCBs. The EPA warns, "There is reason for concern," and advises "prudent avoidance" of EMF’s.

What’s being done?
In a nutshell, not much! As far back as 1971 A White House advisory committee said that nonionizing radiation from radar, television transmitters, microwave ovens, medical diathermy, as well as numerous other sources was "permeating" our environment. Since that time we have added a host of new and potentially dangerous sources: Cell phones, MRIs, computers, wireless phones and transmitters, and we even expose fetuses with diagnostic ultrasound. The only thing you can do is exercise "prudent avoidance."

What can you do?
Purchase a Gauss meter that can measure EMFs and radio frequencies. The price range is typically from $40 to $200. Measure your home, work and play environments. Measure both inside and outside your home. Electricity is an integral part of our society and therefore EMFs are going to be all around in our environment. Bare in mind that limited exposure is not as damaging as prolonged exposure at higher levels. There are units that you can buy that will help to neutralize the EMFs, and there is special metal foil that will block EMFs but it makes more sense to try to avoid them altogether.
Utilizing "prudent avoidance" as the FDA advises might include:

• Rearrange your surroundings so that you are not exposed to EMFs from appliances above, below or along side you work area. Refrigerators an other household appliances can emit rather strong EMFs and walls will not stop them.
Do not sit closer than six feet to your TV.

• You may want to stop using or at least limit your use of electric hairdryers, toothbrushes and razors.

• Avoid using a cordless phone and particularly limit your use of cell phones.

• Pull bed at least 3 to 4 feet from wall.

• Change fluorescent bulbs to incandescent.

• If you have electric baseboard heat, move beds and cribs away from them.

• Try to stand at least five feet from your microwave.

• If you sleep in a waterbed unplug the heater at night.

• Do not use an electric blanket or heating pad.

The bottom line is nobody is completely sure what is a safe exposure is either in strength or length of exposure. What is known, however, is that EMFs are a major problem. If good health is you objective you need to limit your exposure.

Supplements for Protection From EMF

Iodine - The MOST important supplement to help protect against the damage of all types of radiation AND helps repair the damage after exposure. The main reason iodine protects against EMF damage is the support it gives the thyroid which gives EMF protection, it ensures programmed cell death of damaged and diseased cells (cancer cells shrink when given iodine), iodine helps remove heavy metals (heavy metals encourage electromagnetic radiation damage) and has a protective effect on brain tissue. 
In order to properly utilize iodine take selenium, magnesium and vitamin C with it. The most effective iodine I found to help my EMF hypersensitivity and to protect from EMF exposure is Lugol's iodine.

Spirulina - Having electromagnetic sensitivity, I have found a strong protective effect of taking spirulina on a daily basis and especially before I go into environmental EMF radiation areas. Provides cell protection and proper bone marrow functioning including production of red blood cells (red blood cells are destroyed by EMF radiation), provides carotenes that protect against cancer cell generation. Spirulina is a whole food so you need to consume at least the recommended serving amount or more for best protection from EMF.

Noni - Has stabilized iridoids which are powerful adaptogens. This plant enhances the overall ability of the body to adapt to the stress of the electromagnetic radiation by targeting and correcting imbalances before bodily systems are affected. Strengthens immune system, helps maintain a healthy heart (EMF radiation is known to damage the heart), helps protect from DNA damage (even wireless EMF is known to damage DNA), detoxes damaged cells and assists proper functioning of lymph. This product had the most powerful effect of all supplements in supporting my body when I had cancer and electromagnetic radiation poisoning.

Curcumin - Neutralizes free radicals which protect against cell damage, protects from detrimental effects of radiation by regulating cell division. Also reduces inflammation caused by radiation. Prevents and eliminates plaque in brain associated with alzheimer's and can be caused from EMF radiation exposure.

Vitamin B6 - (pyridoxine) helps rebuild neurotransmitters in the brain which have been damaged by radiation. Vitamin B6 helps maintain healthy brain function. The vitamin plays a key role in synthesizing antibodies that are needed to fight various diseases. Vitamin B6 helps in maintaining normal nerve function. It plays a crucial role in the synthesis of neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotonin. It also assists normal nerve cell communication. The vitamin helps in forming red blood cells. It helps in breaking down and digesting proteins. So, the higher the protein intake, the greater is the requirement of vitamin B6.

Algin - Detoxes the body from ionizing radiation like strontium 90, cesium 137, along with blocking their absorption and also detoxes heavy metals like mercury from the body which magnifies EMF radiation damage.

Melatonin - Production is decreased by exposure to EMF’s, probably second most important supplement consideration for protection from EMF next to iodine. New study shows it helps reverse damage to brain neurons caused by EMF exposure. Necessary for good sleep, regulates gonadal hormones, moods, behavior, key component of immune system, regulates internal clock and has direct effect on the growth of breast, prostate and colon cancers. Take only at night.

Tryptophan - Extra is needed with increased EMF exposure. A precursor of melatonin and serotonin thus restoring these hormones destroyed by EMF exposure, has a calming effect and supports deep sleep.

Minerals for EMF Health

When exposed to EMF radiation, the protective calcium coating is removed from the outside of the cells allowing the cell to dump its selenium, potassium, lithium, calcium and magnesium causing a shortage in these minerals which must them be replenished for best protection from EMF.

Selenium - Exposure to EMF’s cause a loss of this mineral, protects DNA from radiation damage, assists in the proper utilization of iodine in the body, known to have a protective effect against the production of cancer cells.

Electrical Pollution Interferes with Your Body's Cells

EMF should be considered a harmful invader to your body, just like any other environmental toxin. It interferes with your health at the cellular level because you are actually an electrical being.

Your body is a complex communication device where cells, tissues, organs and organisms all "talk." At each of these levels, the communication includes finely tuned bio-electrical transmitters and receivers, which are tuned like tuning into a radio station.

What happens when you expose a radio antenna to a significant amount of external noise? You get static from the noise -- and that is what is happening to your body in today's electrosmog environment.

Two of the more well-known biological impacts from electrosmog are the interruption of your brain wave patterns leading to behavior issues and the interference with your body's communication system (cytoskeleton) leading to abnormal neurological function, such as dementia, chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia.

At a cellular level, your cell membrane receptors (the brain of the cell) recognize electromagnetic fields at very low levels of exposure producing a stress response similar to that produced by exposure to heavy metals or toxic chemicals.

This can cause the cell membrane to go from an "active" or permeable state where it allows nutrients in and toxins out, to an "inactive" state where the cell membrane is impermeable.

During a normal day, your cells will change states thousands of time, but when under constant environmental stress, the membranes can be locked in the inactive state.

This is often referred to as "oxidative stress" as nutrients are able to enter into the cell, while toxins (free radicals) are not allowed to leave.

There is also real evidence that this inactive state can even have geno-toxic effects, meaning electrosmog is toxic by both damaging DNA and preventing your body from repairing DNA, which can be the first step to cancer.

For health, your body must be able to communicate within itself, that is, to be in harmony with the natural rhythm of the earth and all life. The chaotic and unpredictable patterns from electrosmog can create noise in your body and force your body out of harmony.

The Six Primary Types of EMF

In the interview above Vicki Warren explains the primary EMFs to check for around your home:

Static Electric Fields: These are made up of static electricity caused by ions released from synthetic materials in your home. When combined, they can make you feel unwell, which underscores the importance of choosing natural materials for your furniture, cabinetry, flooring and other building supplies.

Residual Magnetism: Most often this occurs from metal in your bed, which can change its magnetic field. Your body sleeps best in a constant magnetic field, rather than one impacted by metals. (If you hold a liquid-filled compass over your sleeping area, north should always be north; a spinning compass signals residual magnetism).

Power Frequency: This includes the wiring in your walls, electrical outlets, extension cords, lamps, and other electricity sources. They produce electric fields that essentially turn your body into a large antenna and interfere with your cells' ability to communicate with one another. A bedroom disrupted with power frequency is especially unhealthy to sleep in, as cells cannot regenerate properly, potentially leading to insomnia and other diseases.

Power Frequency Magnetic Fields: These are caused by building wiring errors and also when power lines to your home run underground near your sleeping area. An electrical panel box located on a wall near your sleeping area or even a refrigerator or TV located on the other side of the wall from where you sleep can also lead to power frequency magnetic fields.

Radiofrequency/Communications: This includes a broad range of cordless phones, wireless devices, cell phones and cell phone towers, all of which can interfere with your health.
Radioactivity (and its byproduct radon): Radioactivity enters your home from building materials (such as granite -- one-third of the granite in homes is radioactive) or radon gas coming up out of the ground.

Light and sound are also part of the EMF spectrum, so if you're near a highway or airport that surrounds your home in artificial light or excessive noise, you can also be impacted by that, although this is less common than the EMF sources listed above. 

When Dealing with EMF, Start in Your Sleeping Area

It's during sleep that your body regenerates and detoxifies, so you want your bedroom to be a sleeping sanctuary with very low EMF issues. It's a given that you're going to be exposed to varying levels of EMF during your waking hours, so giving your body a break during the night is really important.

First, make sure that your bed does not contain any metal. The vast majority of beds (90-95 percent) contain metal springs and/or frames. Unfortunately, these metal frames and metal box springs can amplify and distort the earth's natural magnetic field, which can lead to a non-restful sleep along with a range of other symptoms including:

•Depression and fatigue
•Muscle cramps

Research has shown that for your body to properly detoxify during sleep it must be alkaline, and high electromagnetic fields lead to acidity. This is especially true for heavy metal detoxification.

To find out if your bed contains residual magnetism, I encourage you to use the compass trick that Vicki Warren describes (if a liquid-filled compass spins when held over your bed, it means residual magnetism is present). You can further make your bedroom a low-EMF sleep sanctuary by:

• Turning off all the fuses at night (or at least those that are in your bedroom).

• Shielding your bed with a special metalized fabric or low cost aluminum screening to protect yourself from harmful frequencies that can disrupt cellular communication.

• Get a non electronic alarm clock. Yes I said that. Also realize they work better anyway than their digital cousins. Those classic bells could scare the spirit straight out of anyone sleeping better than any an obnoxious repeated beep. 

• If you are constructing a new home or renovating one and the walls are being rebuilt you can install radiant barrier, which is a tough type of aluminum foil that will also very effectively screen out the EMF. This is what I did for my own bedroom.

• At minimum, moving your bed so that your head is at least 3-6 feet from all electrical outlets. If you are constructing the walls you can put the wires inside pipes, which will virtually eliminate the fields that are generated in the room when the current runs through the wire.

• Turning off and unplugging everything electrical in your sleeping area, including your computer, WI-FI, cell and portable phones.

• Sleeping on a non-metal bed and mattress.

More Tips for Creating a Healthy, Low-EMF Home Environment

There are several more steps you can take to lower your EMF burden right now:

• Beware that cell phones and WI-FI are not the only EMF sources you need to be cautious of. Essentially, most all electronics will generate EMFs, including the wiring in your home, electric alarm clocks, electric blankets, computers and lamps, just to mention a few. For best results, avoid using electric blankets and electric heating pads, and unplug all electrical appliances when not in use. Even better, turn off the fuses directly.

• Protect yourself from cordless phones. A cordless phone base station placed about two feet from your head and plugged in for three minutes at a time can significantly disrupt your health, including your heart rhythms.

• The base station of a DECT phone always transmits at full power, so this is not a device you want sitting on your nightstand next to your bed, on your kitchen counter or even on at all if it is not necessary.

• If you do use a conventional cordless phone, be sure to keep the base station at least three rooms away from where everyone sleeps and where you spend the most time during the day. Or simply keep it off except in the limited circumstances where you feel you need to use it.

• A low cost alternative to EMF is a simple one. Aluminum Screening. It can lower the radiation from many objects drastically and end up saving you thousands of dollars. Get creative how you build your screens, and also incorporate the Pyramid design with a ground wire.
